A Collaborative Webinar Planning for Sustainable Solutions in Iraq
SPE Erbil Section, UNIDO, SPE Italian Section, SPE Central Iraq Section, and SPE Basrah Section
In a recent virtual meeting, key officers and representatives from the SPE Erbil Section, UNIDO, SPE Italian Section, SPE Central Iraq Section, and SPE Basrah Section came together to discuss the organization of a webinar series and a hybrid workshop focused on addressing pressing environmental and industrial issues in Iraq. UNIDO offered to collaborate with IFI to provide necessary facilities for hosting a hybrid event in Baghdad. The dialogue underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to promote sustainable practices and technologies in the region.
The conversation began with a discussion on the necessity of raising awareness about environmental impacts and promoting practical solutions. Emphasis was placed on reducing electricity consumption and controlling water pollution. It was highlighted that awareness campaigns should target all demographics, including women in their households, to instill environmentally friendly habits.
Initially, there was a proposal to hold the first webinar on July 25th. However, concerns were raised about the tight timeframe for adequate preparation and the availability of participants. It was suggested that the event be postponed to early September to ensure comprehensive coverage of topics and participation from all relevant stakeholders. The idea of organizing two webinars, one in mid-September and another at the end of September, was also considered.
Several critical topics were identified for the webinars, including:
Utilizing associated petroleum gas for carbon capture and storage (CCUS)
Methane emission reduction strategies
Water treatment and pollution control
Energy efficiency and sustainable practices in the oil and gas industry
The meeting concluded with an agreement to finalize the agenda and topics as soon as possible, allowing adequate time for preparation and expert engagement. It was acknowledged that the success of the webinars would hinge on thorough planning and the active involvement of all stakeholders.
